Lubrication: The Most Important Step

What to Use
- Graphite powder: The best choice for pin tumbler locks. Dry lubricant, will not attract dust. Available at any hardware store.
- Teflon-based spray (like Tri-Flow): Also excellent. Penetrates deeply and dries clean.
- AVOID WD-40 in the keyway: It is a solvent and short-term lubricant, not a lock lubricant. It evaporates and leaves a residue that attracts grime, making the problem worse over time.
How to Lubricate
- Insert a thin straw nozzle into the keyway
- Apply a small amount of graphite or Teflon lubricant
- Insert your key and work it in and out several times to distribute
- Operate the lock 10–15 times with the key to spread the lubricant throughout the pins
Do this once a year for interior locks and twice a year for exterior locks exposed to Texas heat, rain, and humidity.
Check and Tighten Screws
Door hardware vibrates every time the door is slammed. Over time, the screws in your deadbolt faceplate, strike plate, and knob/lever rosette can loosen. Check and snug these screws every 12 months. If a screw no longer holds (it just spins), the hole has stripped — fill it with a toothpick and wood glue, let it cure, then re-drive the screw.
Check Door and Frame Alignment
Texas homes shift slightly with temperature and humidity changes. A door that sticks or a bolt that does not extend smoothly may be a frame alignment issue, not a lock issue. Look for:
- Uneven gaps around the door
- The bolt not aligning with the strike plate hole
- The door dragging on the floor or top frame
Minor adjustments (tightening hinge screws, adjusting strike plate position) often solve this.
Replace Worn Keys
A worn key can damage lock pins over time. If your key is shiny, thin at the tips of the cuts, or has rounded edges, get a new copy cut from the original (not a copy of a copy, which degrades accuracy).
