First: Do Not Make It Worse
The most important step is to stop turning the lock. If the key fragment is protruding even slightly from the keyway, resist the urge to grab it with your fingers or pliers and yank — this usually pushes the fragment deeper and makes extraction harder.
Also avoid:
- Inserting the other half of the key and trying to turn it
- Spraying lubricant like WD-40 directly into the keyway (it attracts dust and can worsen the problem)
- Trying to dig out the fragment with a knife blade or toothpick (can damage the lock pins)
DIY Extraction: When It Might Work
If the broken tip is visible and extends at least 1–2 cm out of the keyway, you may be able to remove it yourself:
- Use needle-nose pliers if the fragment sticks out far enough to grip
- A broken key extractor tool (available at hardware stores) works by hooking the teeth of the key blade
- Spray a small amount of graphite powder lubricant into the keyway first to help the fragment slide out
If the fragment is flush with or recessed into the keyway, DIY extraction usually fails and can cause additional damage.
When to Call a Professional

- The fragment is not visible or is deeply lodged
- The lock was already stiff or sticky before the key broke
- You have tried extraction and it is not moving
- You need access to your home or vehicle right now
